| Wildstang, Team 111, is a FIRST team comprising of students, teachers, and parents from Rolling Meadows and Wheeling High Schools, supported by mentors from Motorola, Inc. in Schaumburg, Illinois. Wildstang was started back in 1995, and its name comes from a combination of the two high school's mascots, the Wheeling Wildcats and the Rolling Meadows Mustangs. Wildstang is an eclectic mix of personalities and backgrounds, and it is a true tie-dyed team.
Wildstang is fortunate enough to be able to incorporate the FIRST robotics program into a technology-focused class throughout the entire school year. In the fall, students participate in small seminars designed to increase their knowledge and awareness in technical areas. This introduces students to many different aspects of engineering and business to which they might otherwise never be exposed.
The build season starts in January each year and is only 6 weeks long, but designing and creating a competitive robot requires much more time, effort, and hardwork which extends well into the competition season. This can only be accomplished if everyone works together as a team. Various subteams contribute to the overall team goal: Mechanical, Electrical, Software/Firmware, Scouting (WASH), Playing Field, Animation, Video, Strategy, and Promotions.
In competition, Wildstang has been a tough competitor and has been complimented with many awards and much recognition, both in the FIRST community and our own. In 2003, one of our goals was finally realized by leading the championship-winning alliance.
Wildstang also participates in community events and supports technological education. A few students and mentors also mentor FIRST LEGO League teams (5th-9th grade students), and last year Wildstang held its first ever LEGO League regional. In addition, Wildstang participates in robot demonstrations
at various community events, and whenever called upon, participates in spreading the word of FIRST. |
